NEW BOOK FORESEES HYDROFOILS REVOLUTIONIZING OCEAN CRUISING
In a new book, author David A. Keiper points out the potentials of hydrofoils in the future of yachting. He describes the ocean passages by the world's first and only successful offshore hydrofoil sailing yacht. That boat was the 31'4"-long hydrofoil trimaran Williwaw.
Williwaw's seakindliness while hydrofoiling was phenomenal, equivalent to far larger, heavier and more expensive yachts. Succeeding boats should be able to achieve the full speed potential---close to 50 knots---inherent in hydrofoils.
Keiper designed and built the boat in northern California, and first tested it on San Francisco Bay. After some improvements, he ventured offshore. Ultimately, he cruised the boat nearly 20,000 miles around the Pacific, between California, Hawaii and New Zealand. Williwaw handled well in all sorts of sea and wind conditions. He tells of the boat's performance and of his interesting adventures on some of the South Sea islands.
An old adage has it that an ocean passage in a sailing yacht is a Fourth Class way to travel, so that one can arrive First Class. Modern improvements to sailing yachts have raised it to at least Third Class travel, and perhaps close to Second. However, with a hydrofoil multihull, it is now possible to turn the ocean passage into First Class travel.
An Appendix in the book has study-plan drawings of new
hydrofoil sailing yacht designs.

About
the 14-minute video tape of Williwaw in action:
Because words and still pictures can not adequately describe the experience
of hydrofoil sailing, the video tape is an excellent companion
to the book. In color, and comes with a two-page legend that makes
up for the lack of sound.
List price: $20, in American tape format (VHS/NTSC).
